The FDA’s Crusade Against Lube

Sliquid - The FDA's crusade against lube

According to Pahon, personal lubricants are classified as Class II medical devices, putting them in the same category as items like condoms, acupuncture needles, and powered wheelchairs. In order for their products to be sold on store shelves, lube companies must obtain what’s called premarket notification or 510(k) clearance, a process that requires a comprehensive round of safety testing.

John Goepfert, CEO of the lube maker Simply Slick, says the process to get 510(k) for his company took about two years and cost over $200,000. Simply Slick’s lube is based on a novel formula that includes glycerin and castor oil—which, Goepfert notes proudly, is also the stuff used to slicken NASCAR V8 engines. According to lab documents Goepfert showed me, tests included examinations for condom compatibility and an antimicrobial study. Lab workers also spent five days injecting the lube into the vaginas of New Zealand white rabbits in order to check for possible discharge, irritation, and infection.

That latter part is what concerns Dean Elliott. The founder and CEO of Sliquid, he’s long championed ethical, environmentally friendly business practices, and he considers himself a great animal lover too—indeed, the company regularly makes charitable donations to animal sanctuaries in Georgia, Utah, and Texas.

He’s currently in the process of obtaining 510(k) certification, and he’s gathering up data to present to the FDA to show that they won’t need animal testing for their products. (Pahon, the agency spokesperson, says animal testing isn’t required if a company can provide a suitable alternative.)

“For me, it’s led to hundreds of sleepless nights,” Elliott says, thoughts of defenseless bunnies being probed with Sliquid lube running through his head. “There’s a better way to do this than put us all through the animal testing.”

The Inqueery – Sliquid Oceanics Review

Confession time; I am terrified of the ocean. Not just the ocean, really any body of water, or even like, a stream, or water dripping off a roof, or a garbage can lid turned upside down and left out in the rain. It’s not a fear that I feel the need to confront, I am perfectly happy being afraid of water. Specifically the animals and plants in it. Really anything with a slime element just gives me the hardcore creeps. That’s why when I heard that one of my favorite lubricants was releasing a new formula called Sliquid Oceanics which is infused with elements of the ocean, I had very mixed feelings. If I wouldn’t even dare to put my foot in the ocean, would I dare to put something from the ocean in my ass? These are the deepest thoughts I ever have.

Sliquid: The Lube to End All Lubes

You’ve probably seen me mention Sliquid before, or at least I hope you have.  They’re hands down my favorite lubricant company, and in my opinion, make the best and safest lubes on the market.

If you’ve never tried a lubricant before, I really encourage it.  It’s not for people with a “problem”.  Your partner isn’t doing anything wrong if you need a lubricant (and neither are you!).  If you’re taking hormonal birth control, antihistamines, or antidepressants, you might notice a decrease in natural lubrication.  You can use lube to last longer (no chafing!), have shower sex (silicone!), or add flavor to oral.

Sliquid has two lines, Natural and Organic.  Both are glycerin- and paraben-free, which makes them suitable for even the most sensitive bits.  Both are completely vegan.  The big difference is that the Organic line uses – duh – organic ingredients.  It’s entirely up to you which you try.  My body gets along perfectly with the Naturals line, and I don’t make too great an effort to shop for organic food.

A Love Letter to Lube: Sliquid Swirl Flavoured Lubricants

It’s fair to say that Sliquid’s Swirl line has spoilt me. It’s also fair to say that I am completely fine with Sliquid’s lubes spoiling me, as long as I can keep on getting my hands on them. Against all logic, not many UK stores stock Sliquid lube. Thankfully Lovehoney and Amazon both sell Sliquid, so I’ve got my fix for the foreseeable future at least.

Anyway, I should probably talk about this lubricant.

For me it doesn’t get much better than this when it comes to oral lubes. The Sliquid line is the crème de la crème, the pick of the litter, a lube worthy of receiving a love letter. Put simply I adore this lubricant, and here’s why.

Deviantt Kitten Review: Sliquid H2O

Ahhhh, we’ve all heard about the wonders of the almighty glycerin- and paraben-free Sliquid. I’d been putting off buying some to try it out for myself, it’s kinda expensive ($19.95 for 255ml at Lovehoney) and I couldn’t bring myself to spend that much on lube when I already had lube that worked just fine.

I’ve been using the same lube since I got my first sex toy. I knew I’d need lube because my first toy was a dildo and aside from fingers I’d never had anything in me. I had no clue what was good and what wasn’t, so I asked mum who told me her preferred lube and I went with that one. I ventured out once and bought a different blend from the same company and hated it, so I decided to stick with the first one forever. So aside from these two lubes I had no idea. Except for that I hate runny lube. Runny lube is horrible.

Eventually what convinced me was that if I’m going to preach about safe toys, I should also be able to talk about body-friendly lubes. And so I bit the bullet and got myself some.

Sliquid Organics Natural Gel Review

Sliquid is well known for making natural lubes that are body safe and vegan friendly.  The Natural Gel isn’t the exception.  This water-based lubricant is hypoallergenic, non-staining, condom friendly, and so much more.  Because the consistency is thicker, it’s a great product to use during intercourse; anal sex included.  I wouldn’t say it’s the perfect universal lube because it absorbs too quickly during certain activities, but it works extremely well for others.

Sliquid Organics Natural Gel is a lubricant that’s completely body-safe and condom friendly.  It’s a great option if you’re looking for something a little thicker than the typical water-based option, but don’t want to compromise on ingredients.

This lube was “created by sensitive women, for sensible women“, so it’s not difficult to understand why it works best for vaginal use.  Whether you’re using it alone, or during intercourse, it lasts a surprisingly long time and isn’t likely you’d need to reapply.  The thick consistency makes anal play comfortable and feels more natural than thinner lubes.  It might not be right for extended anal play, but it works well for intercourse.

Product Review: Sliquid Natural Intimate Lubricants

Ahimsa Wellness

“Do I really need to use lube? Why should I?” These are questions I commonly hear from folks whenever the subject of lube comes up. Our society likes to perpetuate the idea that you shouldn’t really need lube during sex play – and that’s not true. Hormone fluctuation, stress, diet, trauma, medication and brain disorders can all change how much natural lubrication our bodies need. And then there’s the fact that lube has been shown to amplify levels of pleasure for both hetero and queer sex, regardless of “need.” Wetter is better, folks! It makes vaginal and solo sex feel better, it’s a necessity for great hand or anal sex, and it’s a little-known fact that it can take your oral sex game to the next level! So no matter where you are in your sexual journey, read on for some great ideas for your next adventure!
